James A. Garfield

President

James Abram Garfield was the 20th President of the United States, serving from March 1881 until his assassination later that year. Before his presidency, he served as a major general in the Union Army during the American Civil War and as a member of the U.S. House of Representatives from Ohio. Garfield was a brilliant orator and a skilled mathematician who advocated for civil service reform and a stronger education system. His presidency was tragically cut short after only 200 days when he was shot by a disgruntled office seeker, making his tenure the second-shortest in U.S. presidential history.
