Thomas Blood

Soldier

Thomas Blood was an Anglo-Irish officer and self-styled colonel best known for his audacious attempt to steal the Crown Jewels of England. Born in County Clare, Ireland, he fought for Parliament during the English Civil Wars and was granted land for his service. After the Restoration, he lost his lands and became involved in several plots against the government, culminating in the infamous 1671 heist at the Tower of London. Remarkably, after being captured, he was not only pardoned by King Charles II but also had his lands restored and was granted a pension, living out his days in surprising comfort.
