Theophrastus

Philosopher

Theophrastus was a Greek philosopher from Eresos in Lesbos, who became the successor to Aristotle in the Peripatetic school. He came to Athens at a young age and initially studied in Plato's Academy before joining Aristotle's circle. His vast writings covered a wide range of subjects, from botany and physics to ethics and metaphysics, earning him the title 'father of botany' for his major works on plants. After Aristotle's death, Theophrastus presided over the Lyceum for thirty-five years, continuing its legacy of empirical research and philosophical inquiry.
