Mark Tobey was an American abstract expressionist painter, widely recognized for his 'white writing' calligraphic style. Born in Centerville, Wisconsin, he spent much of his life traveling and living abroad, including in Europe and Asia. His work, deeply influenced by Asian calligraphy and the Baháʼí Faith, often explored spiritual and mystical themes. Tobey became the first American painter since James McNeill Whistler to win the grand prize at the Venice Biennale in 1958, cementing his international reputation.
