John Wanamaker was a prominent American merchant and a pioneer in retail and advertising. He opened his first men's clothing store in 1861 and later established one of the first department stores in the United States. Wanamaker is credited with innovations such as the price tag and the money-back guarantee, which revolutionized the customer experience. A devout Christian, he also served as the United States Postmaster General from 1889 to 1893.
