John Lawson

Explorer

John Lawson was an English explorer, naturalist, and writer renowned for his significant contributions to the early history of colonial North America. Between 1700 and 1708, he undertook an extensive journey through the interior of the Carolina colony, documenting its geography, flora, fauna, and the cultures of its Native American inhabitants. His detailed observations were published in his influential book, 'A New Voyage to Carolina,' which provided Europeans with one of the most comprehensive accounts of the region at the time. Tragically, Lawson's life was cut short in 1711 when he was captured and executed by Tuscarora Indians, an event that precipitated the Tuscarora War.
