George Leigh Mallory

Mountaineer

George Herbert Leigh Mallory was a pioneering English mountaineer who took part in the first three British expeditions to Mount Everest in the early 1920s. Born in Cheshire, England, he developed a passion for rock climbing and mountaineering during his time at Winchester College and Cambridge University. During the 1924 British Mount Everest expedition, Mallory and his climbing partner, Andrew Irvine, disappeared on the north-east ridge while attempting to make the first ascent. His fate remained a mystery for 75 years until his body was discovered in 1999, sparking renewed debate over whether he and Irvine had reached the summit.
