Sir Edmund Hillary was a New Zealand mountaineer, explorer, and philanthropist who gained worldwide fame for his historic achievement. On May 29, 1953, he and Nepali-Indian Sherpa mountaineer Tenzing Norgay became the first climbers confirmed to have reached the summit of Mount Everest. Following his ascent, Hillary devoted much of his life to aiding the Sherpa people of Nepal through the Himalayan Trust, which he founded. He was named by Time magazine as one of the 100 most influential people of the 20th century.
