George Colman the Elder was a prominent English dramatist, theatre manager, and essayist during the 18th century. Born in Florence, Italy, he was educated at Westminster School and Christ Church, Oxford, where he began his literary career. He is best known for his successful comedies, including "The Jealous Wife" and "The Clandestine Marriage," the latter co-written with David Garrick. Colman also managed the Covent Garden and Haymarket Theatres, significantly influencing the London stage during his time.
