Charles Francis Richter was an American seismologist and physicist. He is most famous as the creator of the Richter magnitude scale, which quantified the size of earthquakes. Developed in collaboration with Beno Gutenberg in 1935, this scale was a pivotal tool for seismology for many decades. Richter spent most of his career at the California Institute of Technology and was instrumental in establishing Southern California's seismological network.
