Fritz Zwicky

Scientist

Fritz Zwicky was a brilliant and eccentric Swiss astronomer who spent most of his professional life at the California Institute of Technology. He is credited with coining the term "supernova" and made numerous foundational contributions to the understanding of galaxies and celestial mechanics. Zwicky was the first to infer the existence of dark matter, observing that the visible mass of the Coma galaxy cluster was insufficient to hold it together gravitationally. Despite his often-controversial personality, his groundbreaking ideas have profoundly shaped modern astrophysics and cosmology.
