Robert Larimore 'Bobby' Riggs was a prominent American tennis player who was the World No. 1 for three years in the 1940s. He achieved major success by winning the Wimbledon singles, doubles, and mixed doubles titles in 1939. Riggs is most famously remembered for his highly publicized 'Battle of the Sexes' tennis matches in 1973. He first defeated Margaret Court but then lost decisively to Billie Jean King in a landmark event for women's sports and culture.
