William Shirley

Colonial Governor

William Shirley was a British colonial administrator and military officer who played a significant role in mid-18th century North America. He served as the governor of the Province of Massachusetts Bay for an extended period, from 1741 to 1756, making him one of its longest-serving governors. Shirley was instrumental in organizing the successful 1745 expedition against the French fortress of Louisbourg during King George's War. His later career included a brief term as governor of the Bahamas before he retired to Massachusetts, where he died in 1771.
