Peter Stuyvesant

Colonial Governor

Peter Stuyvesant was the last Dutch Director-General of the colony of New Netherland, serving from 1647 until its transfer to the English in 1664. Known for his autocratic rule and distinctive wooden leg, he oversaw the significant expansion and fortification of the settlement of New Amsterdam. He established a system of law and order, though his strict governance often brought him into conflict with the colonists. After surrendering the colony, which was renamed New York, he retired to his farm on Manhattan island where he lived until his death.
