William M. 'Bill' Thomas is an American politician who served as a Republican member of the U.S. House of Representatives from 1979 to 2007. He represented California's Central Valley, including most of Kern County, during his tenure in Congress. Thomas was a highly influential figure, most notably serving as the powerful Chairman of the House Ways and Means Committee from 2001 to 2007. In this role, he was a key architect of major tax-cut legislation and the Medicare prescription drug benefit, and after retiring, he became a visiting fellow at the American Enterprise Institute.
