William Jennings Bryan was a prominent American orator and politician from Nebraska. Beginning in the 1890s, he emerged as a dominant force in the Democratic Party, running three times as the party's nominee for President of the United States. He also served as the 41st United States Secretary of State under President Woodrow Wilson. Known for his 'Cross of Gold' speech, Bryan was a champion of populism and a staunch opponent of imperialism and the gold standard.
