William James was a seminal American philosopher and psychologist who was a leading thinker of the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. He is widely considered to be one of the most influential philosophers the United States has ever produced and is often labeled the 'Father of American psychology.' James was a leading proponent of the philosophical school of pragmatism and also developed the functionalist school of thought in psychology. His major works, including 'The Principles of Psychology' and 'The Varieties of Religious Experience,' continue to be studied and debated worldwide.
