Anacharsis

Philosopher

Anacharsis was a Scythian philosopher who traveled from his homeland on the northern shores of the Black Sea to Athens in the early 6th century BC. He made a great impression on the ancient Greeks as a 'barbarian' who embodied plain-speaking wisdom and a critical perspective on Greek institutions. Celebrated for his aphorisms and simple way of life, he was considered by some to be one of the Seven Sages of Greece. His legacy is that of an outsider whose incisive observations highlighted the virtues of moderation and the follies of civilization.
