Thomas Otway was a prominent English dramatist of the Restoration period, celebrated for his powerful and emotional tragedies. Born in Sussex, he was educated at Winchester College and Christ Church, Oxford, before moving to London to pursue a career in theatre. His most acclaimed works, The Orphan and Venice Preserv'd, are masterpieces of pathetic tragedy, exploring themes of love, betrayal, and political conspiracy. Despite his literary success, Otway lived a life of poverty and died in destitution at the young age of 33.
