Thomas Bowdler

Physician

Thomas Bowdler was an English physician and philanthropist best known for publishing an expurgated edition of William Shakespeare's works. His edition, The Family Shakspeare, aimed to remove any content he considered vulgar or inappropriate for women and children. This practice of censoring literature led to the creation of the term 'bowdlerize,' which means to omit parts of a text considered improper. Though his intentions were to make classic literature more accessible, his name became synonymous with prudish censorship.
