Stephen Spender

Poet

Sir Stephen Harold Spender was a renowned English poet, novelist, and essayist who concentrated on themes of social injustice and class struggle in his work. As a prominent member of the 'Auden Group' in the 1930s alongside W. H. Auden and Christopher Isherwood, he became a leading voice of his generation. His early poetry was deeply political and often reflected his socialist sympathies, though his later work became more personal and autobiographical. Throughout his long career, Spender also served as a professor, editor of literary magazines, and was appointed the United States Poet Laureate Consultant in Poetry in 1965.
