Samuel Hoffenstein was a Lithuanian-American screenwriter, poet, and wit, born in what is now Lithuania. After moving to the United States, he became a prominent newspaper columnist and critic in New York City. He later transitioned to Hollywood, where he co-wrote screenplays for acclaimed films like 'Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde' (1931) and the classic film noir 'Laura' (1944), for which he received an Academy Award nomination. His sharp, cynical humor also found an outlet in his popular collections of poetry, such as 'Poems in Praise of Practically Nothing'.
