Samuel Butler

Poet

Samuel Butler was a celebrated English poet and satirist, best known for his long mock-heroic poem 'Hudibras'. This work, published in three parts between 1663 and 1678, satirized the religious and political factions of the English Civil War, particularly the Puritans. His sharp wit and masterful use of the octosyllabic couplet, later known as Hudibrastic verse, earned him considerable fame during the Restoration. Despite his literary success and royal favor, he died in poverty, leaving behind a legacy as one of the great satirists of his era.
