Pierre-Simon Laplace

Scientist

Pierre-Simon Laplace was an influential French scholar and polymath whose work was fundamental to the development of engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, and astronomy. He is best known for his five-volume work, Mécanique Céleste, which translated the geometric study of classical mechanics to one based on calculus, opening up a broader range of problems. Laplace also formulated Laplace's equation and pioneered the Laplace transform which appears in many branches of mathematical physics. His work in probability theory established a systematic framework for the subject and included the development of Bayesian probability.
