Philip Schaff

Theologian

Philip Schaff was a Swiss-born, German-educated Protestant theologian and church historian who spent most of his adult life and career in the United States. He is best known for his monumental work, the "History of the Christian Church," which remains a standard text in the field of ecclesiastical history. A key figure in the Mercersburg Theology movement, he sought to mediate between German and American theological traditions. Schaff also played a significant role in ecumenical movements and was instrumental in the first revision of the King James Bible, which resulted in the Revised Version.
