Paul Desmond

Musician

Paul Desmond was an American jazz alto saxophonist and composer, celebrated for his pure, melodic tone and lyrical improvisational style. He is best known as a long-standing member of the Dave Brubeck Quartet, where his cool, relaxed playing provided a perfect counterpoint to Brubeck's more percussive piano. Desmond composed the quartet's most famous piece, "Take Five," which became one of the best-selling jazz singles of all time. His distinctive sound, which he famously wanted to resemble a "dry martini," left a lasting influence on generations of jazz musicians.
