Parmenides of Elea was a pre-Socratic Greek philosopher whose single known work, a poem titled "On Nature," has had a profound influence on Western thought. He argued that reality, or "what-is," is one eternal, unchanging, and indivisible whole, fundamentally challenging the notion of change and multiplicity. His philosophy is famously encapsulated in the assertion that "it is," meaning that being is the only true reality and non-being is impossible to conceive. This radical monism established the foundations of metaphysics and presented a critical challenge to all subsequent philosophers, including Plato and Aristotle.
