He is remembered for his epigrams, his novel The Picture of Dorian Gray, and his numerous plays, including The Importance of Being Earnest. Wilde's aesthetic and flamboyant lifestyle were central to his public persona and his philosophy of aestheticism. After a series of infamous trials, he was imprisoned for gross indecency, and his health sharply declined, leading to his early death at age 46.
