Miguel de Cervantes Saavedra was a Spanish writer widely regarded as the greatest writer in the Spanish language and one of the world's pre-eminent novelists. His major work, 'Don Quixote,' is considered a founding work of Western literature and is often cited as the first modern novel. Before achieving literary fame, Cervantes led an adventurous life as a soldier, where he was wounded in the Battle of Lepanto. His profound influence on the Spanish language has been so immense that it is often called 'la lengua de Cervantes' (the language of Cervantes).
