Leo Szilard

Scientist

Leo Szilard was a brilliant Hungarian-American physicist and inventor who first conceived of the nuclear chain reaction in 1933. His foresight led him to co-patent the idea of a nuclear reactor and draft the famous Einstein–Szilárd letter, which urged the U.S. to begin its atomic bomb project. After contributing to the Manhattan Project, he became a vocal and influential advocate for nuclear arms control and global disarmament. Throughout his later career, Szilard shifted his focus to biology, making significant contributions to the field until his death.
