Lena Mary Calhoun Horne was a pioneering American singer, dancer, actress, and civil rights activist. Her career spanned over 70 years, appearing in film, television, and theatre, and she was noted for her work with the NAACP and her refusal to play stereotypical roles for Black actresses. Horne was the first Black performer to sign a long-term contract with a major Hollywood studio, MGM, becoming a celebrated nightclub performer and recording artist.
