Kwame Nkrumah was a Ghanaian politician, political theorist, and revolutionary who led the Gold Coast to independence from Britain in 1957. As the first Prime Minister and later President of Ghana, he was a founding member of the Organization of African Unity and a prominent advocate for Pan-Africanism. His government focused on national industrial and energy projects, developing a strong national education system, and promoting a pan-Africanist foreign policy. Ousted in a military coup in 1966, Nkrumah spent his last years in exile in Guinea, where he continued to write about revolutionary political theory.
