Knute Nelson was a prominent Norwegian-American politician who played a significant role in Minnesota and national politics. Born in Evanger, Norway, he immigrated to the United States as a child and later served in the Union Army during the Civil War. His distinguished political career included serving as the 12th Governor of Minnesota from 1893 to 1895. Subsequently, he was elected to the United States Senate, where he represented Minnesota for five terms until his death in 1923.
