Joseph Aloysius Lyons was an influential Australian politician who served as the 10th Prime Minister of Australia from 1932 until his death in 1939. Beginning his career as a teacher, he rose through the Tasmanian Labor Party to become Premier of Tasmania before entering federal politics. In 1931, during the Great Depression, he left the Labor Party to lead the newly formed United Australia Party to a landslide victory. Remembered as 'Honest Joe', Lyons was a widely popular leader who oversaw Australia's recovery from the economic crisis with fiscally conservative policies.
