Jonas Salk was an American virologist and medical researcher who developed one of the first successful polio vaccines. Born in New York City, he attended the City College of New York and New York University School of Medicine. Salk chose to do medical research instead of becoming a practicing physician, beginning his work on the polio vaccine in 1947 at the University of Pittsburgh.
