John Pomfret was an English poet and clergyman born in Luton, Bedfordshire. He is best remembered for his highly popular poem, 'The Choice,' which was first published in 1700 and celebrated a life of quiet moderation. This particular work became one of the most widely read and influential poems of the 18th century, shaping ideals of retired living. Pomfret's life was cut short when he contracted smallpox and died in London in 1702.
