John Herschel Glenn Jr. was a pioneering American astronaut, decorated Marine Corps aviator, and United States Senator from Ohio. As one of the original Mercury Seven astronauts, he made history on February 20, 1962, when he became the first American to orbit the Earth aboard the Friendship 7 spacecraft. After his celebrated NASA career, Glenn embarked on a long and distinguished political career, serving four terms as a Democratic U.S. Senator. He returned to space in 1998 at the age of 77 aboard the Space Shuttle Discovery, becoming the oldest person to fly in space and a symbol of lifelong exploration.
