Joan of Arc

National Heroine

Joan of Arc, nicknamed 'The Maid of Orléans,' is a national heroine of France and a Roman Catholic saint. Born a peasant girl in Domrémy, she claimed to have received visions from saints instructing her to support Charles VII and recover France from English domination during the Hundred Years' War. The uncrowned King Charles VII sent the teenage Joan to the siege of Orléans as part of a relief army, which she successfully lifted in just nine days. She was later captured, tried for heresy by a pro-English court, and burned at the stake at the age of 19, but was posthumously exonerated and canonized in 1920.
