Joan Miró

“A painting must be fertile. It must give birth to a world.”

“I feel the need to achieve the maximum intensity with the minimum of means.”

“I want to assassinate painting.”

“The spectacle of the sky overwhelms me.”

“What is important is not so much what I want to say, but what I don't want to say.”

“For me, an object is something that lives. It's a living thing.”

“I begin drawing and as I draw the painting begins to assert itself, or suggest itself, under my hand.”

“The works must be conceived with fire in the soul but executed with clinical coolness.”

“The painting rises from the brushstrokes as a poem rises from the words. The meaning comes later.”

“The more I work, the more I want to work. I have a passion for work.”

“My characters have undergone the same process of simplification as the colors.”

“A simple line painted with the brush can lead to freedom and happiness.”

“I need a starting point, even if it's just a speck of dust or a flash of light.”

“I try to apply colors like words that shape poems, like notes that shape music.”
