Jane Addams was a pioneering American settlement activist, social reformer, sociologist, and public philosopher. She co-founded Hull House in Chicago, one of the first and most famous settlement houses in North America, providing social and educational opportunities for working-class people. A prominent leader in the women's suffrage and world peace movements, she was a co-founder of the ACLU and a charter member of the NAACP. In 1931, she became the first American woman to be awarded the Nobel Peace Prize for her tireless efforts in promoting peace and social justice.
