Dennis Banks was a Native American leader, teacher, activist, and author of the Anishinaabe people. He is best known for co-founding the American Indian Movement (AIM) in 1968 to address systemic issues of poverty, police brutality, and treaty rights affecting Native Americans. Banks was a prominent figure in major protests, including the 1969-71 occupation of Alcatraz Island and the 1973 Wounded Knee incident. He dedicated his life to advocating for the sovereignty, spiritual traditions, and cultural preservation of indigenous peoples across the Americas.
