Shōgun

Tokugawa Ieyasu was the founder and first shōgun of the Tokugawa shogunate, which effectively ruled Japan for over 250 years. Born as Matsudaira Takechiyo, he was one of the 'Three Great Unifiers' of Japan, alongside Oda Nobunaga and Toyotomi Hideyoshi. After the pivotal Battle of Sekigahara in 1600, he consolidated power and was appointed shōgun in 1603, establishing his government in Edo. His rule ushered in a long period of peace and stability known as the Edo period, leaving a profound legacy on Japanese society.
