Henry Laurens

Statesman

Henry Laurens was a wealthy American merchant, slave trader, and rice planter from South Carolina who became a key political leader during the American Revolution. He served as the President of the Second Continental Congress, notably during the period when the Articles of Confederation were passed. In 1780, while on a diplomatic mission, he was captured by the British and imprisoned in the Tower of London, the only high-ranking American to be held there. After being exchanged for General Cornwallis, Laurens went on to help negotiate the Treaty of Paris, which officially ended the war with Great Britain.
