David Ben-Gurion

Statesman

David Ben-Gurion was the primary national founder of the State of Israel and its first Prime Minister. Born in Płońsk, Poland (then part of the Russian Empire), he immigrated to Ottoman Palestine in 1906, driven by his Zionist convictions. He rose to become the head of the World Zionist Organization, leading the Jewish community through the establishment of the state in 1948. As Prime Minister, he oversaw the country through the 1948 Arab-Israeli War, established its key institutions, and promoted mass Jewish immigration.
