Henry A. Kissinger was a prominent American diplomat, political scientist, and statesman who served as National Security Advisor and later as Secretary of State under presidents Richard Nixon and Gerald Ford. A key figure in American foreign policy, he pioneered the policy of détente with the Soviet Union and played a pivotal role in opening relations with the People's Republic of China. For his efforts in negotiating a ceasefire in Vietnam, he was controversially awarded the 1973 Nobel Peace Prize.
