Gregor Mendel

Scientist

Gregor Mendel was an Augustinian friar and botanist who is acclaimed as the founder of the modern science of genetics. Through his meticulous work on pea plants, he discovered the fundamental laws of inheritance which describe how traits are passed from parents to offspring. His groundbreaking experiments, conducted in his monastery's garden, laid the foundation for understanding dominant and recessive traits. Although his work was largely unrecognized during his lifetime, it was rediscovered in the early 20th century and became central to biology.
