Giraldus Cambrensis

Historian

Giraldus Cambrensis, also known as Gerald of Wales, was a Cambro-Norman archdeacon, historian, and writer who was a key figure in the development of Welsh identity. Born at Manorbier Castle in Pembrokeshire, he was of mixed Norman and Welsh descent and received a thorough education in Paris. His most famous works, "Itinerarium Cambriae" and "Descriptio Cambriae", provide invaluable and vivid accounts of life and geography in 12th-century Wales. Despite his ambitions, he was twice denied the bishopric of St David's, a struggle which dominated much of his later life and writings.
