Flavius Josephus

Historian

Flavius Josephus was a first-century Romano-Jewish historian and military leader, best known for his detailed writings on Jewish history and the First Jewish-Roman War. Born Yosef ben Matityahu in Jerusalem to a priestly and royal family, he commanded Jewish forces in Galilee during the initial rebellion against Rome. After being captured by the Romans, he gained the favor of the future emperor Vespasian and became a Roman citizen and advisor. His major works, including "The Jewish War" and "Antiquities of the Jews," provide invaluable, though sometimes controversial, historical accounts of the period.
