Geronimo

Activist

Geronimo was a prominent leader and medicine man from the Bedonkohe band of the Chiricahua Apache people. For over 25 years, he led his people in resisting the encroachment of Mexican and U.S. military forces on their tribal lands in the American Southwest. His band was one of the last independent Native American fighting forces to refuse to accept the United States' terms of surrender. After his final surrender in 1886, he became a celebrity, appearing at fairs, but he was never allowed to return to his homeland.
