George Leonard Carey is a retired English Anglican bishop who served as the 103rd Archbishop of Canterbury from 1991 to 2002. Born into a working-class family in London's East End, he initially worked as an office clerk before pursuing theological studies. During his tenure as Archbishop, he was known for his evangelical stance and his efforts to bridge traditionalist and liberal wings of the Anglican Communion. After his retirement, he was made a life peer as Baron Carey of Clifton and has continued to be involved in public and religious discourse.
